PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.
The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.
The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the French league winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.
Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to seize a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.
In a remarkable turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial leveler in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to seal a convincing penalty victory.
Now 14-time champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
