No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
