Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
